President Donald Trump signed an executive order creating a commission to develop a proposal for a federal academy focused on space science, engineering, leadership and public service.
The proposed U.S. Space Academy would be led by NASA and train students for military and civilian careers in the country's space programs, but its final structure, location, admissions rules and service requirements have not been determined.
Commission has 120 days to report
The NASA administrator will chair the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy. White House science and economic-policy advisers will serve as vice chairs, and the NASA deputy administrator will serve as executive director.
The panel also includes representatives from the Department of War, the Air Force, the Office of Management and Budget, the National Security Council and the White House chief of staff's office.
Within 120 days, the commission must recommend a governance framework, degree programs, leadership training, applicant prerequisites and potential service obligations for graduates. It will also propose a process for selecting a permanent location and identify administrative and legislative steps needed to establish the academy.
Academy still requires additional approvals
The order directs the commission to consider placing the academy within NASA and to explore pilot programs and partnerships under existing authority. Working groups may consult with experts from universities, industry and other organizations.
Implementation would follow presidential approval and any necessary action by Congress. The order says the project is subject to available funding and applicable law.
