Hochul campaign attacks Blakeman over Trump tariffs

Gov. Kathy Hochul's reelection campaign criticized Republican Bruce Blakeman on Tuesday over his support for President Donald Trump's tariffs, arguing the trade policy is raising consumer costs and hurting New York State's economy.

The campaign statement followed reports that consumers could face higher costs after Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods. The release compared the policy with protectionist measures associated with the Great Depression and cited reporting about effects on New York tourism, prices and employment.

Hochul campaign spokesperson Ryan Radulovacki said Blakeman has been one of Trump's strongest supporters on tariffs. The statement characterized the trade policy as an effort to raise costs and faulted Blakeman for backing it.

The release did not include a response from Blakeman or the Trump administration. It was issued by Friends for Kathy Hochul, the governor's campaign committee.
