Cayuga County inmate charged after deputies hit with contaminated toilet water, sheriff says

A Cayuga County Jail inmate was charged Aug. 21 after he allegedly threw toilet water contaminated with urine at deputies and threatened them with a broken meal tray, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Brian Schenck said David M. O'Brien, 53, of Baldwinsville became disruptive July 22 while incarcerated at the jail in Sennett. Investigators allege O'Brien used a cup to throw the contaminated water, striking multiple deputies, then broke a meal tray and threatened to use a piece of it to harm them.

O'Brien was charged with three counts of aggravated harassment of an employee by an inmate and one count of third-degree menacing, according to the arrest release. The sheriff's office said investigators developed probable cause for the charges.

O'Brien appeared in centralized arraignment court Aug. 21 while being held at the Cayuga County Jail on unrelated charges.
