Geneva Salvation Army leader named Youth Advocate of the Year

Geneva 2030 has named Salvation Army Capt. Manuel Sulca its 2026 Youth Advocate of the Year for his work creating opportunities for local children.

Sulca leads the Geneva Salvation Army's free Music and Arts Education Program, which provides instrumental instruction, vocal training and group performance opportunities. The program serves about 20 to 25 children each week during the school year and offers instruction in English and Spanish when needed.

Santa Abraham, chair of the Geneva Salvation Army Advisory Board, nominated Sulca for the award. Abraham said his leadership has created a welcoming place where children can build confidence and develop their abilities.

Earlier this year, Geneva participants competed for the first time in the Salvation Army's Divisional Music & Arts competition, known as Star Search. They placed third in Timbrels Brigade A, third in Singing Company and second in Vocal Solo Level 4 while competing with young people from across Upstate New York.

The Geneva 2030 award recognizes youth advocacy, leadership and contributions to the well-being and success of children in the city.

Sulca said he was grateful for the honor and that helping young people gain confidence, develop their talents and recognize their potential has been a rewarding part of his ministry.
