George Lombard Jr. announced his arrival in the major leagues with one swing Tuesday night. The New York Yankees’ top prospect hit his first career home run in his second big league at-bat, driving an 0-2 pitch from St. Louis Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins over the left-center field wall in the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium to extend New York’s lead to 2-0.
The 21-year-old shortstop was promoted Monday after earning the call with his strong play at Triple-A.
Lombard also made franchise history with his debut. At 21, he became the third-youngest player to debut at shortstop for the Yankees, trailing only Bobby Murcer, who was 19, and Derek Jeter, who made his debut at 20.
