New York students disenrolled by Howard University shortly before the fall semester can seek expedited admission to participating SUNY and CUNY campuses, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday.
The state response follows Howard's decision to disenroll more than 500 admitted students ahead of fall 2026 classes, leaving affected students searching for alternatives weeks before the semester.
Participating campuses with available capacity will conduct expedited late admissions reviews. The plan will use existing space and is not expected to reduce opportunities for other applicants, according to the governor's office.
Potential SUNY participants include campuses in Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, New Paltz and Oneonta, with other campuses reviewing their capacity.
Affected students will receive an $800 credit to offset nonrefundable enrollment deposits paid to Howard University.
State officials said the program is open to impacted New York residents. Eligibility details and admissions instructions are available through SUNY and CUNY admissions offices.
