A Pennsylvania man was charged with criminal possession of a firearm after Ithaca police said officers found a handgun during a welfare check investigation earlier this month.
The Ithaca Police Department said officers responded to the 200 block of Cherry Street around 12:12 a.m. June 14 for a check-the-welfare complaint and confirmed there were no safety concerns involving the parties.
During the investigation, officers located and recovered a Taurus handgun from a vehicle being operated by Garrett Westbrook, 25, of New Albany, Pennsylvania, police said.
The handgun was secured as evidence pending further investigation.
Police said Westbrook was arrested around 10:50 a.m. June 24 and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony.
Westbrook was arraigned in Ithaca City Court and released on his own recognizance by Judge Peacock.
Police said anyone with information can contact Ithaca police dispatch, police administration, the department tipline or the anonymous email tip address listed by the city.
