A Summerhill man was arrested after Cayuga County deputies investigated a reported domestic incident in Sempronius.
Sheriff Brian Schenck said Norman D. Dewitt, 29, was arrested June 19 on charges of aggravated family offense, criminal obstruction of breathing, petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Deputies responded around 2:50 a.m. June 19 to a residence in the town of Sempronius for a reported domestic incident.
Investigators determined Dewitt stole property from the victim and, during a physical altercation, placed his knee on the victim’s throat, obstructing the person’s breathing, according to the sheriff’s office.
Schenck said Dewitt was on probation for a domestic-related incident involving a qualifying offense within the past five years, resulting in the aggravated family offense charge.
Deputies said Dewitt fled on a minibike before they arrived but was later found hiding in a garage in Summerhill. After he was taken into custody, deputies said they found the victim’s property on him.
Dewitt was taken to the Cayuga County Jail, arraigned in centralized arraignment court and remanded to the jail, according to the sheriff’s office.
