Firefighters from several Cayuga County departments responded to a large outdoor fire Wednesday after an initial report of a tractor fire in a field on Beach Road.
According to the Throop Fire Department, first-arriving crews determined the tractor was not on fire. Instead, firefighters found a large trash fire burning in a field and requested additional resources to help contain and extinguish the blaze.
Departments from Throop, Montezuma, Port Byron and Aurelius responded to the scene, along with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Cayuga County 911 and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Firefighters worked throughout the incident to extinguish the fire and conduct overhaul operations to ensure no hotspots remained.
Officials asked the public to avoid the area while tanker trucks continued shuttling water to the scene, noting that local roads were not wide enough to safely accommodate both emergency vehicles and regular traffic.
No injuries were reported. Fire officials also reminded residents not to leave fires unattended, especially with temperatures reaching the mid-70s and humid conditions contributing to elevated fire risks.
