Defendant pleads guilty in Sam Nordquist homicide case

One of the seven people charged in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Sam Nordquist has pleaded guilty and now faces a potential sentence of up to 50 years to life in prison.

Emily J. Motyka entered guilty pleas Tuesday in Ontario County Court to second-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping for her role in the case, according to the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office.

As part of the plea agreement, Motyka waived her right to appeal and will remain incarcerated pending sentencing. Prosecutors said she faces a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison and a maximum sentence of 50 years to life, with any sentence carrying a maximum term of life imprisonment.

The district attorney’s office said Nordquist’s family was informed of the plea before the court appearance and expressed support for the resolution. Prosecutors also noted that Motyka, who was 19 at the time of the crimes and had no prior criminal history, was cooperative throughout the case and is the only defendant to have accepted responsibility for her conduct.

The prosecution of the remaining defendants is continuing. Co-defendant Precious Arzuaga is scheduled to go to trial on Aug. 31, and prosecutors said no plea offer will be extended in that case.
