Yates County bridge detour sparks farm concerns

A proposed nine-mile bridge detour could add thousands of dollars in costs for Yates County farmers, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

County officials are weighing whether to detour traffic during repairs to the Ferguson Corners Road bridge over Flint Creek or install a temporary crossing. Farmers say the detour would force hundreds of extra trips through Gorham and Potter, increasing fuel costs, travel times, and traffic near Marcus Whitman Elementary School.

Highway Superintendent Doug Rapalee estimates a detour would allow construction to begin in 2027 and finish in about three months, while a temporary bridge could delay the project until 2028 and add hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs. Lawmakers will continue discussing the issue at a June 1 Public Works Committee meeting.
