Boaters planning to head out on Seneca Lake this Memorial Day weekend are being urged to use extreme caution as elevated water levels continue creating hazardous conditions across the lake.
The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol warned this week that Seneca Lake remains roughly 12 to 14 inches above normal summer levels, even as water levels have slowly started to recede.
Authorities said large debris, including partially submerged logs, continues surfacing throughout the lake and could cause catastrophic damage to boats or serious injuries to passengers.
Marine patrol officers warned that debris floating just below the water’s surface can be especially difficult to spot during low-light conditions or while towing skiers, tubers, and wake surfers.
The sheriff’s office is urging boaters to slow down, maintain a constant lookout, and use extra caution throughout the busy holiday weekend as increased traffic returns to the lake.
