Ontario County marks Older Americans Month with focus on healthy aging

Ontario County officials are highlighting the importance of healthy aging this month, urging older residents to take a more active role in managing their well-being.

The Ontario County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed May as Older Americans Month, aligning with a national observance that recognizes the contributions of older adults while promoting awareness around aging-related issues.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” centers on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility — a message local officials say is critical as populations age and demand for services continues to grow.

County leaders are encouraging residents to focus on practical, everyday steps to maintain independence and improve quality of life. That includes staying current with medical screenings, maintaining social connections, eating nutritious foods, and incorporating regular physical activity.

“Taking care of your health doesn’t have to be complicated,” said Triciajean Saxton, director of the Ontario County Office for the Aging. “It’s really about the small things you do every day.”

Older Americans Month, first established in 1963, serves as both a recognition effort and a call to action for communities to better support aging populations. In Ontario County, officials say that includes expanding access to services and encouraging residents to take advantage of available programs.

The county’s Office for the Aging continues to provide resources aimed at supporting both physical and mental health, including programs designed to reduce isolation and promote long-term wellness.

Officials say the goal is to shift the conversation around aging from one focused on limitations to one centered on opportunity — empowering older adults to stay active, engaged, and independent for as long as possible.
