Yankees back Ryan Weathers with power, complete sweep of Royals

The New York Yankees rolled past the Kansas City Royals, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, completing a three-game sweep while finally giving Ryan Weathers the run support he had been missing. The win moved New York to 13-9 and capped a series defined by power and strong pitching.

The Yankees wasted no time taking control. Aaron Judge put them in front with a two-run homer in the first inning, setting the tone early. Austin Wells added a sacrifice fly later in the frame, and Ben Rice followed with a solo shot in the second to stretch the lead. Rice continues to emerge as a key piece in the lineup, staying right behind Judge among the team’s home run leaders.

New York broke things open in the fifth when Trent Grisham delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, crushing a three-run homer to put the game out of reach. The lineup combined patience and power, consistently applying pressure and capitalizing on mistakes.

On the mound, Weathers turned in his sharpest outing of the season. The left-hander worked 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking one. He settled in quickly after a brief early test, retiring 12 straight at one point and keeping Kansas City from generating any rhythm at the plate.

Box Score

New York is off on Monday before opening a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at Fenway Park.
