Yates County deputies to step up enforcement during distracted driving crackdown

Drivers across Yates County can expect increased enforcement this week as local deputies join a national campaign targeting distracted driving.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office announced it will participate in the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign from April 9 through April 13, part of a nationwide effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Officials said deputies will be actively looking for drivers using handheld devices, including texting, calling, or browsing while behind the wheel. Sheriff Francis Ryan warned that violations will result in tickets, emphasizing that distracted driving remains a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes.

According to federal data, more than 3,200 people were killed and over 315,000 injured in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024, though officials note those figures are likely underreported.

Under New York law, using a handheld device while driving is prohibited and can result in fines ranging from $50 to $450, along with points on a driver’s license. Junior drivers may also face license suspension.

Authorities are urging motorists to adopt safer habits, including pulling over to use a phone, designating a passenger to handle communications, or using “Do Not Disturb” features to limit distractions.
