Utility spikes squeeze local businesses

A nearly doubled utility bill is forcing tough choices for a longtime Rochester pizzeria owner, according to RochesterFirst, as rising costs hit small businesses hard. Salvatore Fantauzzo said some locations now pay around $2,000 a month in utilities.

He said raising menu prices isn’t an option because customers already face higher costs. Instead, his business has cut expenses, including printed materials and aggressive coupon deals, to stay afloat.

Fantauzzo warned many small businesses are struggling to survive under similar pressure. He’s urging state leaders to step in and address rising utility costs before more closures follow.
