Canandaigua police debut electric patrol vehicles

The Canandaigua Police Department has added its first fully electric vehicles to its patrol fleet.

Officials said the vehicles — a Ford Mustang Mach-E and a Ford F-150 Lightning — were funded through a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority Clean Energy Grant.

The department said the vehicles are the first fully electric patrol vehicles of their kind in the local area and will be used to evaluate how electric vehicles perform in a law enforcement environment.

The Mustang Mach-E will be assigned to the department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit, where officers typically carry less equipment and benefit from a smaller, more maneuverable vehicle in congested areas.

The F-150 Lightning will be used by the department’s Evidence and Crime Scene Technicians Unit. Police said the truck can transport specialized evidence collection equipment and provide electrical power for tools without requiring a generator.

Officials also said the truck can tow and supply power for the department’s child safety seat technician and traffic enforcement trailers during special events.

Emergency equipment for the vehicles was designed and installed by NYSPSEL in Newark.
