A Steuben County jail inmate faces felony charges after authorities said he tried to bribe a corrections officer to secure his release and attempted to escape from a housing unit.
James Racalto, 61, of Bath was arrested Tuesday after officers responded to a reported emergency at the jail, according to Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard.
The sheriff's office said Racalto created a distraction in the housing unit and tried to elude responding officers. Officers quickly took him back into custody, and he never left the jail's secure area.
Racalto was charged with attempted first-degree escape, a class C felony; third-degree bribery, a class D felony; resisting arrest; and obstructing governmental administration.
He was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to the Steuben County jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or a $20,000 bond.
