The U.S. House has passed legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security as lawmakers work to restore full government operations.
Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York said the bill would provide funding for DHS agencies responsible for border security, emergency response and transportation safety.
The legislation would fund several agencies within the department, including Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, FEMA and the Secret Service.
According to Tenney’s office, some DHS operations have recently been limited to essential functions during the ongoing government shutdown.
“With threats around the world escalating and national security on the line, the United States cannot afford to allow the continued shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security,” Tenney said.
She urged the Senate to pass the legislation so the department can resume full operations.
The bill now awaits consideration in the Senate.
