Ohio man charged with drug-impaired driving in Steuben County

State police arrested an Ohio man after a traffic stop in Steuben County led to drug possession and impaired driving charges.

William J. Surmik, 32, was stopped around 9:17 a.m. Feb. 27 on State Route 36 in the town of Hornellsville after troopers saw his 2010 Ford pickup abruptly brake, swerve and come to rest facing the west shoulder of the road.

Troopers said Surmik showed signs of impairment during the stop. They also observed a broken glass smoking device in plain view on the vehicle’s floorboards.

After further investigation, police reported finding about 2.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine, about 0.8 grams of suspected LSD and additional glass smoking devices.

Surmik was taken to State Police in Hornell, where he underwent standardized field sobriety tests. Police said he was determined to be impaired. A breath test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.00%.

A Drug Recognition Expert evaluated Surmik, and he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

He also faces charges of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, along with vehicle and traffic infractions.

Surmik was transported to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment.
