Lyons bridge replacement moves forward

After two years of detours, Lyons drivers finally see a path to a new canal crossing, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Wayne County supervisors approved $472,500 to hire Colliers Engineering & Design to plan a $12.1 million replacement for the Leach Road Bridge over the Erie Canal. Public Works Director Kevin Rooney said the vote kicks off engineering work, with construction funding expected in fall 2029. Officials hope an earlier start could happen if regional funds free up.

The federal government will cover 80% of costs, with the state and county splitting the rest. The new county-owned bridge will add 16-foot lanes and a sidewalk, replacing a narrow, 100-year-old span that carried about 2,600 vehicles daily before closing in 2023.
