State funds Daniel’s Law pilots

New York will invest $6 million to test health-led crisis response teams instead of police, according to Spectrum News.

The state Office of Mental Health awarded $2 million each to Rochester, Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services and Children’s Home of Jefferson County. The funding supports Daniel’s Law, named for Daniel Prude, and will expand programs that send behavioral health professionals and peer counselors to crisis calls.

Rochester will grow its Person In Crisis team, while the other agencies will build or expand similar models. Advocates praised the move but urged lawmakers to add $8 million more in this year’s budget. Gov. Kathy Hochul has not included additional funding in her proposal, but negotiations continue.
