Fourth grader wins NRW Spelling Bee

A fourth grader outlasted eight competitors to claim the top spot at this year’s North Rose-Wolcott Spelling Bee.

Mabel Cahoon won the fourth annual NRW Spelling Bee on February 9 after eight intense rounds of competition. She sealed the victory by correctly spelling the word “grimace.”

Cahoon earned a nomination to represent North Rose-Wolcott at the Wayne-Finger Lakes Regional Spelling Bee next month. The regional competition is scheduled for March 21, and its winner will move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Fifth grader Jason Chapin finished as runner-up and will serve as an alternate if Cahoon cannot attend the regional bee.

Students in grades four through eight had the chance to compete. Organizers provided each participant with a list of words to study in advance.

School officials said spelling bee participation builds spelling ability along with public speaking skills and confidence. They applauded all students who took part for their effort and courage during the event.
