An incarcerated man has been indicted on felony charges after state police say he struck and stabbed a correction officer during a March assault at Auburn Correctional Facility.
Amar Bell, 49, was processed Sept. 18 following an investigation by New York State Police into the attack. Investigators said Bell approached the officer during evening meal movement, struck him in the face and then stabbed him three times with a homemade weapon.
The officer suffered one puncture wound to his upper left arm and two puncture wounds to his upper left back. He was taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.
Correctional facility staff recovered what police described as a homemade, icepick-style weapon after the assault. State Police investigators also reviewed surveillance video from the incident.
The investigation was handled by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at SP Auburn in coordination with the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations.
The case was presented to a Cayuga County grand jury, which indicted Bell on charges of second-degree assault, first-degree possession of dangerous prison contraband and attempted aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon.
Bell was taken to Cayuga County Court on Sept. 18, then transported to SP Auburn for processing before being returned to Department of Corrections and Community Supervision custody.
