Big agenda awaits Yates County lawmakers Monday

A long list of staffing moves, contracts, and funding decisions will land in front of Yates County legislators when they meet Monday afternoon.

The legislature is set to meet at 1 p.m. on February 9, with the session open to the public in person and online.

Several resolutions focus on county staffing and personnel changes. Lawmakers will consider authorizing the sheriff to fill vacant lieutenant and sergeant positions, along with approval to begin recruiting for a new director of information technology. There are also multiple agreements tied to CSEA employees, including vacation adjustments and additional compensation for building maintenance workers who reported to work during a snow emergency.

Public safety and legal services are also on the agenda. Legislators will vote on adding a seized 2014 Chevy Impala to the county fleet for use by the district attorney’s office and renewing an agreement with the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office. Another item would allow the county to contract with a speech therapist to serve children in the Preschool Special Education Program.

Infrastructure and transportation items make up a large portion of the agenda. The legislature is expected to act on multiple bids for highway materials, including abrasive sand, gravel, cold mix patch, and crushed stone. Lawmakers will also consider funding and approvals tied to bridge rehabilitation projects in Dresden, Torrey, and Milo, along with a new intermunicipal agreement with Steuben and Schuyler counties for the Tri-County paint truck.

Several resolutions deal with financial matters. These include budget transfers, appropriating reserve funds and carryover aid, and allocating cannabis tax revenue. One resolution would also authorize the chair to sign a contract for grant writing services.

Environmental and planning issues are also scheduled for discussion. Legislators will amend a resolution related to a public hearing on the county’s Local Solid Waste Management Plan and consider a letter of support for a climate resilience grant application tied to Wildlands Network. Another resolution outlines grant awards for parks, trails, and accessibility projects across the county, including improvements in Penn Yan, Dundee, Torrey, and Middlesex.

Lawmakers will also consider sending a letter to Congress urging action on recent SNAP rule changes, citing concerns about costs and administrative impacts on counties.

Public comment is scheduled at the beginning and end of the meeting, with an executive session possible if needed.
