Auburn fire union leader backs Major for Cayuga sheriff

A key labor leader in Cayuga County has thrown his support behind a candidate for sheriff.

Ryan Guerrette, president of the Auburn Firefighters Union, has endorsed Chris Major in the race for Cayuga County Sheriff, citing Major’s leadership, integrity, and commitment to public safety.

Guerrette said he has worked closely with Major through their respective union roles and community involvement. He also noted his family’s long-standing ties to the county through Shaver Bros., a local business, and his role as vice chairman of Majorpalooza, a charitable event that supports local families in need.

“I’ve worked closely with Chris Major on both a professional and personal level,” Guerrette said. “Through our respective union roles, I’ve seen firsthand that Chris understands labor, public safety, and the importance of collaboration between agencies.”

Guerrette said Major’s character stands out in both professional settings and community work.

“Chris never seeks recognition—he simply steps up when help is needed,” he said. “That speaks volumes about his character.”

Guerrette said he believes Major has the experience and approach needed to lead the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

“Public safety is built on trust, strong relationships, and service,” he said. “I believe Chris Major is the right person to lead the Sheriff’s Office and serve Cayuga County with professionalism and compassion.”

Major said the endorsement carries special meaning.

“Ryan is someone who has dedicated his life to protecting others and serving this community,” Major said. “His support means a great deal to me.”
