Ulysses plan sparks housing backlash

A proposed overhaul of Ulysses’ long-term planning map has residents sounding alarms about growth, farmland, and small-town identity, according to local reporting. The debate centers on a draft 2025 comprehensive plan now open for public comment.

The plan from the Town of Ulysses calls for denser housing, including medium-density development on agricultural land and mixed-use zones allowing up to 30 units per acre in some hamlets. Critics argue the changes clash with population trends and threaten farmland and rural character.

Town leaders say the map is conceptual, but residents warn it could justify future rezoning. Officials urged the public to weigh in at a Jan. 28 hearing as the plan moves forward.
