The African American Men’s Association of Geneva will honor Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark D. Gearan and Mary Herlihy Gearan next month for their longtime support of youth programs and community initiatives.
The recognition will take place during the AAMA’s annual Valentine’s Day fundraising event on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Club 86 in Geneva.
Founded more than 40 years ago, the African American Men’s Association has worked for decades to expand opportunities for local youth through scholarships, mentoring, and college preparation programs. Proceeds from the Valentine’s Day event will benefit the AAMA Scholarship Fund.
According to AAMA member Victor Nelson, the organization’s relationship with the Gearans began shortly after they arrived in Geneva more than 25 years ago. That early connection grew into a multi-year partnership between the AAMA and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
With support from HWS, the association hosted its College Life Skills Program on campus, giving high school students hands-on exposure to the college application process, financial aid, admissions, and budgeting. The program also engaged parents, many of whom were navigating college planning for the first time.
Nelson said HWS students participated alongside AAMA mentors, helping make the experience more relatable for students and families.
President Gearan said he and his wife are grateful for the recognition and praised the association’s impact in the community. The AAMA has previously honored local educators and community advocates and was awarded the HWS President’s Medal in 2017 for its work promoting education and social justice in Geneva.
The fundraiser begins with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $65 for individuals and $120 for couples. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Hank Pearson at (315) 946-3158 or Doris Myers at (315) 224-3710.
