Newark boards to weigh apartment expansion plan

Village officials will take a closer look at a proposed apartment expansion on Church Street during two upcoming public meetings in Newark. The Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals will both review requests tied to the same property early next month.

The Planning Board meets first at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the Village Court Room at the Newark Municipal Building on East Miller Street. A workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. before the regular meeting begins.

Board members are expected to review a proposal from Chris Avery, owner of the property at 128–132 Church St. Avery is seeking an area variance to allow off-street parking in a village-owned parking lot. The request comes as the existing apartment building does not currently have enough parking to support tenants or a proposed increase in the number of units.

The proposal also includes a use variance request to convert one existing apartment into two apartments. The building is considered a preexisting nonconforming use and is located in a B-2 zoning district.

The Zoning Board of Appeals will take up the same project one week later, meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the same location. That meeting also includes a 6 p.m. workshop and approval of minutes before the project review begins.

Both meetings are open to the public, giving residents a chance to hear details of the proposal and follow how the boards handle the variance requests tied to the Church Street property.
