Seneca Falls residents now have a new place to drop off food waste as part of an expanded effort to keep organic material out of the landfill.
The town of Seneca Falls and Seneca Meadows announced a new food waste drop-off site at the Seneca Meadows landfill. The service aims to help residents divert compostable waste, reduce trash, and create useful byproducts for gardening and soil.
The town first launched a food waste drop-off program in 2021 at its highway facilities. The new site adds a second option for residents and sits in the landfill’s residential drop-off area, alongside recycling, electronics recycling, and household waste disposal.
Residents using the food waste drop-off must check in at the scale house during operating hours. The landfill operates from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday, and 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday. The town funds the service, and it is available only to Seneca Falls residents.
“Partnering with Seneca Meadows to help town residents divert the compostable portion of their solid waste and returning nutrients back to our soil and food systems will also help reduce our carbon footprint and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Town Supervisor Frank Schmitter said.
Seneca Meadows leaders said the added location makes participation easier for residents who already visit the facility regularly.
“Seneca Meadows is pleased to partner with the town to provide a second drop-off location for an added convenience for residents that typically use our facility every week, to now also be able to divert their organics on their weekly trips to our residential drop-off area,” District Manager Kyle Black said.
The town and Seneca Meadows have posted lists of acceptable and unacceptable materials online to help residents use the program correctly.
