Utilities prepare for strong winds across upstate

Utility companies are preparing for a strong storm system expected to move across Upstate New York.

Forecasters expect wind gusts to reach 45 to 60 mph, with thunderstorms possible Monday afternoon and a transition to snow late Monday into Tuesday.

National Grid said the earlier storm Friday evening and Saturday caused more than 27,000 outages across the region, with damage concentrated primarily in Western New York.

Crews replaced dozens of poles and transformers and remain in the field completing repairs while preparing for the next weather event.

The company activated its emergency response plan, mobilizing line, field and tree crews and securing outside resources. Crews and equipment are also being pre-staged in areas expected to see the most severe impacts.

National Grid said it is coordinating with municipal leaders and emergency management officials and contacting customers with safety information and storm updates.

New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric also said they are preparing crews and equipment ahead of the storm.

The companies reported the system could affect all service areas, with the highest risk for outages in western and central New York, including Lancaster, Rochester Central, Binghamton, Oneonta, Plattsburgh, Mechanicville and Brewster.

NYSEG and RG&E said they have pre-staged line and tree crews across the state and secured additional contract crews to assist with restoration if outages occur.

Utilities urged residents to stay at least 30 feet from downed power lines, keep mobile devices charged, and monitor forecasts and alerts as the storm approaches.
