Cayuga County felon caught with gun after late-night call

A late-night report of a man with a gun in the Town of Locke led to a felony weapon charge months later. Deputies say the case involved a convicted felon who was not allowed to possess a firearm.

Theodore M. Strauf, 56, of Locke, was arrested Jan. 22 at 3:06 a.m. on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree as a convicted felon.

Deputies were first dispatched to a Locke address on Nov. 14 at about 10:48 p.m. for a report of a subject with a gun. Investigators determined Strauf was in possession of a firearm and had a prior felony conviction. The firearm was secured, and a warrant was later issued for his arrest.

On Jan. 22, Cortland County sheriff’s deputies located Strauf during a traffic stop and took him into custody. He was turned over to Cayuga County deputies and brought to centralized arraignment.

Strauf was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Locke Town Court on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
