Budget optimism breaks Albany streak

For once, Albany sees a budget landing on time, according to Spectrum News 1. State Senate Finance Chair Liz Krueger says Gov. Kathy Hochul avoided major policy fights in her election-year budget.

Krueger points to fewer controversial proposals and no major program cuts, which she says lowers the temperature after years of late deals. Lawmakers also welcome Hochul’s push to expand child care funding, even as details remain under review.

Budget hearings start next week, with debates looming over taxes, climate spending, Medicaid costs, and Hochul’s controversial nuclear power plan. Still, Krueger believes negotiators can hit the April 1 deadline for the first time in years.
