Rollover crash leads to DWI arrest in Varick

A rollover crash on State Route 96 led to a drunken driving arrest Thursday night in the Town of Varick.

Seneca County sheriff’s deputies arrested Mitchell Wingert, 27, of Geneva around 9:45 p.m. Jan. 15, according to Sheriff Tim Thompson.

Deputies say they responded to a report of a personal injury accident after a third party reported a vehicle leaving the roadway. Investigators allege Wingert was traveling northbound on Route 96 when he failed to maintain his lane, drove off the road, and rolled his vehicle into a field between Route 96 and Dilts Road.

After investigating the crash, deputies arrested Wingert for driving while intoxicated. Authorities say he submitted to a breath test, which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.15%.

Wingert was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

Deputies released him on an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in Varick Town Court on Feb. 24 to answer the charge.
