Mets add bullpen depth, sign veteran Luis García

The New York Mets added veteran depth to their bullpen on Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year deal with right-handed reliever Luis García, pending a physical, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The contract is worth $1.75 million, with incentives that could raise the total value to $3 million, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

García, 38, spent last season bouncing between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Angels, and remained a steady presence out of the bullpen. Across 58 appearances, he logged a 3.42 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 55.1 innings, continuing a long track record as a reliable innings-eater.

Over a 13-year major league career that has also included stops with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox, García owns a 4.07 ERA in more than 600 games. One of his calling cards has been limiting damage, highlighted by a career 0.8 home runs allowed per nine innings and just two long balls surrendered last season.

With García in the fold, the Mets’ bullpen mix continues to take shape behind high-leverage arms such as Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. While García is expected to work primarily in middle relief, his experience gives New York a dependable option capable of handling pressure when needed.
