The New York Mets needed an outfielder, and they found their guy late Tuesday night.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets agreed to a trade with the Chicago White Sox to acquire center fielder Luis Robert Jr. in exchange for infielder Luisangel Acuña and right-handed pitcher Truman Pauley.
Robert, 28, arrives in New York after a challenging 2025 season, batting a career-worst .223 with 14 home runs, though he did set a career high with 33 stolen bases. Despite the dip offensively, he remains only a couple of years removed from one of the most dynamic campaigns in White Sox history. During his 2023 All-Star season, Robert hit 38 home runs, drove in 80 runs, and showcased the full range of his five-tool ability. He also earned a Gold Glove in 2020, reinforcing his reputation as a premium defender in center field.
Durability has been the primary concern for the Cuban-born outfielder. Hamstring injuries limited Robert to 110 games last season, continuing a trend that has interrupted stretches of elite production. Even so, Robert has totaled 102 home runs and 102 stolen bases over 577 career games, underscoring his rare blend of power and speed.
Acuña, 23, hit .234 and stole 16 bases in 95 games for the Mets last season. Pauley, 22, was selected by New York in the 12th round of this year’s draft.
For the Mets, the deal represents a calculated bet on upside. Robert is under club control with a $20 million option for 2026 and another option for 2027, giving New York flexibility while hoping a change of scenery and improved health unlock his All-Star form once again.
