Tenney denies campaign fund misuse

A new investigation is raising questions about how a New York congresswoman spent campaign money, according to Politico and the Democrat and Chronicle. The report examines whether Claudia Tenney used campaign funds for tennis-related travel and branded clothing.

Records reviewed by Politico show Tenney’s campaign paid for upscale hotels in cities hosting matches by tennis star Novak Djokovic and spent hundreds on Lacoste gear labeled as donor gifts. The campaign declined to explain the expenses or confirm whether Tenney attended the tournaments.

Tenney’s campaign called the report a political smear and said all spending followed federal election laws. A campaign finance expert told Politico that personal clothing purchases generally violate campaign rules, while one of Tenney’s Democratic challengers blasted the spending as a betrayal of voters.
