Keuka College basketball player earns national honor

A Keuka College men’s basketball standout has earned national recognition after delivering a record-breaking performance on the court.

Senior Lamar Lovelace was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s Division III National Player of the Week after setting a new Keuka College single-game scoring record earlier this month.

Lovelace scored 41 points in a 105–100 victory over Russell Sage on Jan. 9, breaking a program record that had stood for 35 years. He made 15 of 24 shots from the field, including three three-pointers, and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

He followed that performance the next day with 21 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Hartwick.

The Rochester native is averaging 20.3 points per game this season, the second-highest mark in the Empire 8 Conference. He leads the Wolves with 244 total points and is also averaging more than six rebounds per game.

In addition to the national honor, Lovelace was named the Empire 8 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. He is the first Keuka College men’s basketball player to receive national player of the week recognition and the first Empire 8 athlete to earn the honor since the 2016–17 season.

A Visual Communication Design major, Lovelace joins women’s soccer standout Emily McGuigan ’20, M’21 as the only Keuka College student-athletes to be named national players of the week.
