Wayne County eyes new nuclear plant

Already home to a landmark nuclear facility, Wayne County wants more, according to the Finger Lakes Times. County leaders joined seven other upstate communities pitching themselves as hosts for advanced nuclear power.

The New York Power Authority said Wayne County responded to an October 2025 request tied to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s push for at least 1 gigawatt of new nuclear capacity. Officials say the goal centers on grid reliability, clean energy, and affordability.

Board of Supervisors Chair Kim Leonard said the county offers viable sites and community support. Operators including Constellation Energy Generation also expressed interest. NYPA plans to review proposals and shape next steps in 2026.
