High drug prices push patients to cut back

Sticker shock at the pharmacy forces millions of Americans to skip or ration prescriptions, according to a report from The Conversation published by WSYR. About one in five adults say they don’t fill a prescription at least once a year because it costs too much.

The report explains how copays, deductibles, and coinsurance can drive up out-of-pocket costs, especially for brand-name and specialty drugs. It also highlights new Medicare changes, including a $2,100 annual cap on prescription spending starting in 2026 and a payment plan designed to spread costs across the year.

Pharmacists say patients can save money by asking about generics, comparing cash prices, using discount cards, or applying for prescription assistance programs.
