Cayuga Medical Center nurses accuse hospital of union busting

More than 350 nurses plan to rally outside Ithaca Town Hall, accusing Cayuga Medical Center of illegal anti-union tactics and unsafe staffing, according to The Tompkins Weekly. The protest follows a newly filed labor complaint and comes weeks before a scheduled union election.

Nurses allege hospital leaders held mandatory anti-union meetings and pressured staff after a supermajority signed cards to form a union. They say chronic short staffing, limited breaks, and high turnover threaten patient care and worker safety.

Hospital officials reject those claims, pointing to improved patient safety grades and warning that union contracts could reduce flexibility. The National Labor Relations Board will oversee the January vote as investigations continue.
