Helming honors veterans in Canandaigua

Rows of wreaths filled Academy Cemetery as the community gathered to remember local veterans in Canandaigua.

State Sen. Pam Helming joined veterans, volunteers, and families on December 13 for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony, part of a nationwide day of remembrance.

The event honors those who died in service, those who still serve, and those who returned home. It also aims to teach younger generations about the cost of freedom.

Helming said the ceremony carried special meaning because of who stood beside her.

“National Wreaths Across America Day is a powerful reminder that remembrance is something we choose to do,” Helming said. “Each wreath laid represents a life of service, a family’s sacrifice, and a legacy of freedom.”

She highlighted the presence of World War II veteran Gene Gerard and his great-granddaughters.

“It was especially meaningful to stand alongside World War II Veteran Gene Gerard and his great-granddaughters,” Helming said. “It is an unforgettable reminder that the stories of our veterans live on through generations.”

Helming credited local volunteers and community members for keeping the tradition strong.

“Because of the dedication of our volunteers and community, these heroes are never forgotten,” she said.

Wreaths Across America ceremonies take place each year at cemeteries across the country, with volunteers placing wreaths to honor fallen service members.
