Visitors could soon pay more to stay overnight in Canandaigua as city leaders look for new revenue, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
City Council voted 8-0 to seek state approval to raise the room occupancy tax from 3% to 5%, saying stagnant state aid and rising public safety and infrastructure costs leave property taxpayers carrying too much weight. The move requires home-rule legislation from Albany.
Council also approved a $22.4 million city budget for 2026, along with water and sewer budgets, despite concerns over fire staffing levels. Most councilors backed the plan, calling it a tight budget that preserves services.
