State opens virtual senior center statewide

Older New Yorkers now have free access to a virtual hub designed to fight loneliness and keep them socially connected.

The New York State Office for the Aging announced Monday that anyone age 60 and older can now use Selfhelp Community Services’ Virtual Senior Center at no cost. The move expands a partnership that previously limited access to select counties.

State officials say the expansion comes as social isolation continues to pose serious health risks for older adults, especially those who are homebound or lack transportation.

The Virtual Senior Center, known as VSC, offers more than 400 live programs each month. Participants can join classes, wellness activities, discussion groups, and virtual tours, or connect with others through email, games, and self-directed channels.

State Office for the Aging Director Greg Olsen said the platform gives older adults a way to stay engaged without leaving home. He said the program builds on the state’s long-running efforts to address isolation through technology and community partnerships.

Selfhelp Community Services CEO Stuart Kaplan said the expansion reflects years of collaboration with the state. He said access to social connection and enrichment can significantly improve quality of life for older adults.

Selfhelp launched the Virtual Senior Center in 2020 to support seniors who were isolated or homebound. Programs are designed specifically for older adults and are managed by social workers and engagement staff.

An independent evaluation found the program made a measurable difference. More than 80 percent of participants reported feeling less lonely, while three-quarters said they felt less depressed. Many also reported making new friends through the platform.

The service is now available statewide on a computer or tablet. Older adults can sign up online or by calling Selfhelp directly.

State officials say the Virtual Senior Center is one of several public-private partnerships aimed at improving health and well-being for aging New Yorkers through increased access and connection.
