Hornell man tried stabbing deputy during arrest, held on $1,000 bail

Deputies arrested a man after responding to a shoplifting complaint that escalated into a violent confrontation in Hornellsville.

Sheriff’s officials identified the suspect as Adrian J. Palmer, 24, of Seneca Road in Hornell. Deputies say the incident began Dec. 12 at a retail store and ended with Palmer taken into custody after he allegedly resisted arrest.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to Palmer’s residence after a store reported a shoplifting complaint. Investigators say Palmer confirmed the larceny when deputies made contact.

Officials say Palmer physically resisted when deputies tried to place him under arrest. During the struggle, he allegedly produced a knife and attempted to stab one of the deputies in the face.

Deputies disarmed Palmer and took him into custody without reporting additional injuries.

Palmer was charged with attempted assault in the first degree, menacing a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, petit larceny, and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.
