HWS launches new global scholars program in Cyprus for sophomores

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are expanding international opportunities with the launch of a Sophomore Global Scholars program in Cyprus, giving students an early start on global education.

Starting in Fall 2026, selected sophomores from any major will have the chance to study in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, through a new faculty-led program in partnership with the University of Nicosia (UNIC). The effort is designed to immerse students in international learning early in their academic journey, with a blend of coursework, cultural exploration, and career-building experiences.

“Students who will thrive in the program are curious, academically motivated and ready to test themselves in an international environment,” said Dean for Global Education Kristen Welsh.

An immersive academic and cultural experience

The program offers four academic credits, including a signature course led by Professor of Theatre Chris Hatch titled The Performing Arts of Cyprus: Myths, Masks, Movement and Music. The course uses the island’s performance traditions to explore its cultural identity and history through hands-on learning.

Students will also choose two courses from UNIC’s wide array of options and select a fourth credit through either:

  • A credit-bearing internship in industries such as business, tech, social services, or education
  • A faculty-guided research project
  • Or a Greek Language and Culture course

Housing is provided in apartment-style residences close to campus, with easy access to restaurants and coffee shops.

Exploring the island

Throughout the semester, students will participate in excursions to Limassol, Famagusta, Ayia Napa, Paphos, Kyrenia, and the Troodos Mountains, gaining a broader understanding of Cypriot geography and culture.

The World Health Organization recently named Cyprus the safest country in the world for ages 15–29, providing added assurance for families and students participating in the new program.

Support before, during, and after

Students will take part in pre-departure workshops to bond as a cohort and prepare for their time abroad. When they return, they’ll participate in a “Sophomore Salon” to reflect on their experience and share insights with the campus community.

Returned scholars will also have access to mentorship and academic opportunities, such as the Honors Program, fellowships, and summer research. Many may choose to pursue an independent or Honors project based on their time in Cyprus.

They’ll also be encouraged to stay involved through roles in the Center for Global Education, such as Global Ambassadors or Programming Assistants.

How to apply

Applications open in late December, with decisions expected early in the spring semester. A parent information session via Zoom is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9 at 8 p.m. EST.
