Clarence Award celebrates community heroes at Seneca Falls event

Two teachers who inspire local students were honored Saturday with the first-ever Clarence Award during a special panel at the “It’s a Wonderful Life” Festival in Seneca Falls.

The Seneca County Suicide Prevention Coalition created the award to recognize adults who make a positive impact on youth—just like Clarence the angel helped George Bailey see his worth in the classic film. The panel, called Wonderful Wings: Soaring with Hope, Empowering YOUth, featured speakers from the NYS Office of Mental Health, the 988 Lifeline, and South Seneca Schools.

Honoring those who lift others up

Ashley Leederman, a middle school teacher in Seneca Falls, was one of the inaugural winners. Students praised her for believing in them, reminding them that “every day is a new day,” and encouraging them to learn from mistakes.

The second recipient, Caeiln Kordziel of Romulus School, was nominated for her passion for music and efforts to make it accessible to every student—regardless of their financial situation. Students said she sees the good in everyone and helps youth shine.

More community champions recognized

Given the overwhelming number of student submissions—over 125 essays from grades 6–12—the Coalition also named three additional honorees:

  • Ralph Walborn, Romulus coach, for mentoring students beyond the field and modeling joy in everyday life.
  • Lisa Anderson, Seneca Falls teacher, for creating a welcoming classroom where students feel seen and supported.
  • Michael Mirras, a local school board member and active supporter of extracurriculars, for helping youth build confidence and pride in their achievements.

The Clarence Award will be presented annually going forward.
