New corrections officers graduate across Finger Lakes region

Corrections departments across the Finger Lakes are welcoming new officers after multiple graduation ceremonies wrapped up this month at the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy.

In Cayuga County, five deputies completed the 12-week Basic Course for Corrections Officers. Deputies Tyler Bell, Shelby Koch, David Estes, Bradon Dietsche, and Jason Mighells were all recognized at a ceremony held at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. Deputy Mighells earned top honors in firearms training, while Deputy Estes was recognized for having the highest academic score in the class. All five have been assigned to the Custody Division of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Seneca County also celebrated two new graduates, Officers Hayden Delaney and Hunter Ford. Officer Delaney spoke on behalf of the class during the ceremony and received the Physical Fitness award. The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office praised both officers for their hard work and dedication, noting that the department looks forward to their future contributions.

The ceremony also highlighted other department members. Deputy Grace Lipker, a 2023 graduate of the academy, performed the national anthem for the fourth time at a graduation event. Chief Deputy Richard Reed served as Lead Drill Instructor and helped organize the ceremony.

In Yates County, Officer Emily Parkhurst joined the Sheriff’s Office after completing the program alongside 10 other graduates from area agencies. The department congratulated her on a job well done and welcomed her to what they hope will be a long and successful career in corrections.

The Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Corrections Academy offers intensive training over the course of three months, covering firearms, emergency vehicle operations, physical fitness, reality-based scenarios, and general instruction. The program prepares new officers for the challenges of working in correctional facilities throughout the region.
