Drivers in the Finger Lakes and Central New York saw stepped-up patrols and more tickets over the Thanksgiving holiday as part of a statewide crackdown.
New York State Police arrested 247 people for impaired driving and issued more than 13,000 tickets during the enforcement period from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30. The campaign included extra DWI patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and a focus on speeding and aggressive driving.
In the Finger Lakes region (Troop E), troopers arrested 13 people for DWI and handed out 1,521 total tickets. That included 450 for speeding, 19 for distracted driving, and 97 for seatbelt violations.
In Central New York (Troop D), 30 drivers were arrested for DWI, with 1,305 total tickets issued. Speeding made up the largest share with 380 citations, followed by 113 for seatbelt violations.
Troopers also enforced laws against using handheld devices, child restraint violations, and failure to move over for emergency vehicles.
The effort was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and aimed to keep roads safe during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
