Hochul rethinks tax stance after Mamdani’s win

Gov. Kathy Hochul is now open to raising corporate taxes — a sharp shift from her earlier promises — after democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s surprise win as NYC mayor, according to Politico.

The upset has energized New York’s progressive base, prompting loud calls to “tax the rich.” Hochul, facing re-election and pressure from both left-leaning lawmakers and primary challenger Antonio Delgado, is trying to balance business interests with growing public support for wealth taxes.

While she still opposes income tax hikes, insiders say her evolving stance reflects the political reality reshaped by Mamdani’s rise.
